Minutes of the Board of Directors Meeting
March 12, 2008
The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Santee-Wateree Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America was called to order by President Feinstein at 4:15 PM on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the offices of Filter Sales and Service. Powell Black opened the meeting with prayer and led in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. A quorum was present.
Board members present were: Jeff Feinstein, Les Carpenter, Dee Reiter, Chuck Gibbs, Leo Sheedy, Stan Schaetzle, Powell Black, Pete Watcher, Tony Myers and Lohman Reiter.
Minutes: Lohman Reiter moved that the minutes of the Board of Directors Meeting held on February 13, 2008 be approved as presented. Motion was seconded and approved.
Opening Remarks: President Feinstein reported that he had completed the audit of the Chapter’s financial records for 2007 and was impressed with how well the Treasurer, Dee Reiter, had kept the books. He found no discrepancies in the books and reported that his audit was complete.
Reports:
Vice President: No report
Secretary:
a. Updated the chapter officer membership data with the National MOAA Office as of March 2, 2008.
b. Resubmitted, by fax, data to support our request that the federal Internal Revenue Service change the name of our organization from TROA to MOAA on our Federal Tax Identification Number, or issue the chapter a new number. A follow up letter with the same data was sent to the Cincinnati Office of the IRS by Registered Mail, Return Receipt Requested. We are awaiting IRS’s reply.
Treasurer: Dee Reiter reported that total assets of the chapter are $53,619.04. Of these monies, $27,844 is earmarked for the Glover Scholarship Fund, and $16,889 is earmarked for the Richard Miller Scholarship Fund. The financial report was received as information.
Newsletter: The newsletter was printed by The Copy Shop and mailed on March 11.
Programs:
a. The March 25, 2008 Membership Dinner will be held at Carolina Skies at Shaw Air Force Base. Col. Wellon, 3rd Army Advance, will be the speaker. Planning on 48 members and guests to attend. Cost is $20 per person for buffet dinner that includes a carafe of wine per table. Power Point equipment and PA system are needed for the presentation.
1. Reiter and LePage will man the desk; Rogers/Timmons/Black will receive reservations; Feinstein will coordinate the phone bank.
2. Feinstein is still working on obtaining new Name Tags.
b. April Golf Tournament: After much discussion, Chuck Gibbs moved that the MOAA Spring Golf Tournament be cancelled. Lohman Reiter seconded the motion. Motion was approved.
c. Members will be encouraged to support the Golf Tournament held in conjunction with the State AFA Convention to be held at Shaw Air Force Base on May 9, 2008.
d. Scholarship Dinner will be held on Thursday, June 26. 2008 at Carolina Skies.
Membership: Dee Reiter reported that the chapter has received a check for $200 from MOAA Six new members have applied so far in 2008.
Webmaster: No report
Public Relations:
a. Sumter County Veterans Association held a planning meeting for Memorial Day activities. Jeff Feinstein will attend future meetings. Treasurer will remit annual dues when an invoice is received.
b. Shaw Air Force Base Quarterly Awards program has been revised. Need to determine the date and location of the April event.
c. State MOAA has created an Awards Program. A checklist is available for use by the local chapter to evaluate its program as part of the state competition.
d. Outstanding ROTC Unit Award—Checklist is available for self-evaluation.
e. Please contact Stan Schaetzle, Powell Black or Jack Spillers with the names of members who need to be on our “Sick List.”
Personal Affairs:
a. Powell Black reported that the ashes of some veterans have been stored in funeral homes across the nation instead of having been buried. He is checking with local funeral homes to insure that it is not the case here in Sumter. The program is entitled, “Missing In America.”
b. Argretta Ross, wife of Maj. Benjamin F. Ross, III, died recently. A card will be sent to the family.
Golf Committee: No report (See above)
Membership and Directory: No report
Legislative: Tony Myers reported that MOAA requests support for its efforts to get congressional approval to provide five years of “free” health care from the Veterans Administration for “Combat Veterans.”
Scholarship and Awards: All schools in our area have been notified of the MOAA Awards Program and advised of the Richard Miller Scholarship that will be awarded in June.
Old Business:
a. Audit Committee Report—Satisfactory
b. Chapter Calendar distributed to board members with request to submit changes as needed.
c. Waiver of membership dues—Notice will be in the newsletter. The board will act on requests for waiver of membership dues.
New Business: President Feinstein solicited suggestions for ‘honorariums’ for speakers at our membership meetings.
Adjournment: On the motion of Lohman Reiter, the meeting was adjourned at 5:45 PM. The next board meeting will be held at 4:15 PM on Wednesday, April 9, 2008
